Lumineers are a specific brand of dental veneers that are aggressively marketed; therefore, many cosmetic dentistry patients ask about them by name. We are certified to place Lumineers and are happy to provide them for you if that is the brand you prefer. However, we want you to be aware there are subtle differences in each brand of porcelain veneers. Which one to use depends mainly on your teeth and what type of smile you want to obtain. The dentists at Sommers Family Dental understand these differences and can help you determine the specific brand that will best meet your smile goals. Lumineers and other ultra-thin brands are only 0.3 millimeters thick. Most porcelain veneers are 0.5 millimeters thick.
The main difference between Lumineers and some other brands of traditional veneers is they are made out of cerinate porcelain, which is very strong. This means they can be made slightly thinner than traditional veneers—about 0.2mm thinner. You should be aware there are other ultra-thin brands of veneers available as well. Therefore, if an ultra-thin veneer is what you want, you are not limited to just one brand.
The makers of Lumineers, the DenMat Corporation, have marketed them as a no-prep and pain-free veneer, which is appealing. That marketing program may cause unnecessary fear and misunderstanding. No matter which brand you decide on, the process is not painful. And, while Lumineers can be placed without any tooth preparation, it is a rare case where they will look beautiful that way. Generally, when they are placed without any tooth preparation the teeth tend to look a little bulky and will be about two millimeters longer.
This is simply not the case. You won’t have to fear your teeth being “ground down” no matter what brand you choose. With any type of porcelain veneer, there is such a minimal amount of shaving that you really can’t tell the difference between a prepared and unprepared tooth. The grinding down of tooth structure you may have heard about is the type of tooth preparation done with dental crowns, not veneers. You will have a complete tooth.
No matter what brand you decide on, we’ll make sure you will have a gorgeous smile that makes you proud. Click here to learn about our beautiful smile guarantee.
