What Is It Like? The Truth Behind Dental Sedation

Has your dentist discussed the idea of dental sedation with you? If you exhibit any anxiety or have experienced trauma from another practice, you may find it helpful when receiving essential oral healthcare. But how can you know if you’re a candidate? What should you expect? What will it feel like? All of these are common questions dentists receive from interested patients, and it is why you are encouraged to keep reading to discover why so many patients turn to sedation dentistry for a more comfortable experience.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is offered to patients who struggle with visiting the dentist’s office. While some exhibit mild to severe dental anxiety, others may need help to relax a sensitive gag reflex or sit still for prolonged treatment.

Every dental office is different, but the most common forms of sedation include:

  • Nitrous Oxide
  • Oral Conscious Sedation
  • IV Sedation

What Does Each Type of Sedation Feel Like?

The effects of sedation dentistry are different for each person and are based on which method is used.

The typical response of nitrous oxide is relaxation and euphoria. Some patients may begin to laugh or giggle, hence the term ‘laughing gas.’ The good news is that individuals should not experience any fear throughout treatment and will feel normal within minutes of the mask being removed.

Those who receive oral conscious sedation become more relaxed and at ease once in the treatment chair. Although a person will not be fully sedated, their senses will be numbed so that they do not feel any discomfort during their procedure(s). They will also be able to converse with the dental team should it be necessary. The effects of sedation will take time to wear off, so it’s important that the individual be escorted home to rest for the remainder of the day.

With IV sedation, a deeper sense of comfort occurs, as it is a more invasive form of treatment. Instead of being ingested like a pill or inhaled like a gas, it is injected into the bloodstream, so it works quickly and produces a deep state of relaxation. It’s possible for a person to fall asleep; however, they can still be easily woken up.

How to Know If You Are a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry

The only way to know if an individual is a candidate for sedation dentistry is to meet with a trusted dentist. Their advanced knowledge and training as well as their review of one’s medical history will determine if any of the available methods are safe to use.

The most common reasons a person will inquire about sedation include:

  • Having a sensitive gag reflex
  • Past dental trauma
  • Mild, moderate, or severe dental anxiety
  • Difficulty sitting still because of a physical disability
  • Needing multiple dental procedures during a single appointment

Receiving dental sedation can positively change the way a person views the dentist’s office. Being able to eliminate the worry and fear and instead embrace the opportunity for better oral health can be a life-changing decision that produces a healthier, happier, and longer-lasting smile.
